Why you should join a fitness programme and not a gym.

When making the decision to start a fitness journey, there are a lot of options available to you these days. 

With gyms, classes, bootcamps, fitness programmes, online classes, dvd's and youtube videos, personal trainers, there’s so much to choose from. 

Making a decision on what type of training or exercise programme to be a part of can be a minefield. 

There are so many options to consider, so finding the right one for you and your goals can be a daunting process. 

The traditional route to take would be to join a gym, these can also offer access to classes such as circuits, spin or aerobics as part of the membership, although this isnt always the case. There is also the chance to have sessions with a personal trainer, these however, usually aren’t included in the monthly gym membership cost and are paid directly to the trainer per session. 

If you don’t know the first thing about gyms, the equipment and what everything does, then the gym can feel like a particularly intimidating environment. With machines designed to work specific parts of the body that look complicated and potentially painful, and weights stacked in racks that can strike fear in some people due to their size. It can be a scary place to walk into and get stuck in. 

The other thing about gyms is that once you’ve had your induction, and been shown the safe way to use everything, and where to fill your water bottle, you're essentially on your own and left to your own devices. 

Now, for some people this is great, the freedom of being able to discover all these new things to play with is just the kind of adventure they love. For others it's daunting, and the familiar equipment or things they feel comfortable with become the safe place to train. 

Getting out of the routine of that and pushing to do more without much guidance isnt easy and it can mean the results can stagnate as your limits aren’t being pushed.

When that happens the motivation to keep showing up can start to wane. Then comes the issue of paying for a membership you are no longer using... sound familiar? 

The good thing about joining a fitness training group where you are led by a coach is that you are never left to work things out on your own, you are shown how to use the equipment as many times as you need, and you are supported at every stage of your journey.
